THE Head of the Upstream Petroleum Unit within the Namibian Presidency, Kornelia Shilunga, has called on Namibia’s oil and gas sector to stay alert to the evolving geopolitical environment by identifying new trade corridors, investing in resilient infrastructure, and strengthening partnerships capable of withstanding an era of global geopolitical tension.

“The current global crisis should sharpen our focus and reshape our approach to markets, ensuring that we are proactive, adaptive, and strategically positioned in a rapidly changing world,” Shilunga said.

She made these remarks at the Eighth Namibia International Energy Conference at Droombos, held under the theme “The Road to First Oil & Beyond: Partnership, Investment, Growth.” She urged stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to remain attentive to geopolitical developments to ensure energy priorities are effectively addressed.

“We must also take full cognisance of the current geopolitical landscape, which is increasingly complex and demands coordinated global responses. Energy security has once again moved to the centre of global priorities, and oil remains a strategic commodity, an enabler of other industries, and a driver of economic transformation across continents. In this context, Namibia’s oil and gas industry must remain alert to shifts in commodity markets, evolving trade dynamics, and the security of global shipping lanes. The President has also alluded to the situation around the Strait of Hormuz. We must therefore ask ourselves not only where markets stand today, but what lies ahead in the near future. It is precisely for this reason that platforms such as this conference are essential, as they allow us to collectively explore new trade corridors, invest in resilient infrastructure, and strengthen partnerships that can withstand an era of geopolitical friction,” Shilunga continued.

She further encouraged stakeholders to invest in Namibia’s oil and gas sector to support its continued development.

“Redraw, replace, re-engineer and redirect your resources and investment to Namibia. Namibia is deliberate. Namibia is building. We also heard that Namibia is ready to lead and it is open for partnership, growth and investment,” Shilunga added.
