Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Sunchaser 4, a fourth-generation solar car built by students and staff at the Tshwane University of Technology (South Africa), is currently visiting Windhoek.

The car was showcased to pupils and parents of St Paul’s College in the capital on Saturday.

Team manager Tiaan Oosthuizen said the purpose of the exercise is to make young people excited about technology.

The solar car is the university’s most technologically advanced car, and the team is aiming for it cover a total distance of 2 153km on the country’s national highways.

They arrived in Namibia on Wednesday and will be travelling to Swakopmund on Sunday.

The car can travel up to 120km/h, but will most likely cruise below 100km/h for energy efficiency and increased safety.

At a mass of about 200kg and a rolling resistance of about three times less than a regular vehicle, the Sunchaser 4 has a range of around 550km on a flat road during clear-sky conditions.
