Africa-Press – Namibia. The Student Union of Namibia (SUN) says it is not surprised about an alleged leak of examination papers at the University of Namibia (Unam), which it says has become a perennial occurrence.
SUN president Bernard Kavau made this comment while reacting to the alleged leak of examination papers to third-year education students at the Khomasdal, Katima Mulilo and Hifikepunye Pohamba campuses of the university this week.
Kavau said the university should have the exam papers set by external bodies to avoid the recurrence of such incidents.
He said the university should implement steps to prevent leaks, such as having examinations set by external bodies like the Namibia Qualifications Authority or the National Council for Higher Education.
Kavau also suggested that Unam should have a friendly environment where students can report complaints, such as sexual harassment being perpetrated in return for good marks or any exam paper leaks.
“The university should have a contingency plan, be it having a reserve examination paper or supplementing the leaked paper with the supplementary paper instead of postponing the examination papers,” he added.
Kavau said the continuous postponement of examinations have a negative impact on students’ state of mind when they have prepared for exams, only for it to be postponed.
Unam spokesperson Shahid Dickson told The Namibian procedures in case of a leaked exam paper include the cancellation of the specific paper and the setting of another paper, as well as the use of a back-up question paper.
The university is investigating allegations about the leaking of the exam papers.
