Africa-Press – Namibia. SWAKOPMUND Futsal Club are the firm favourites to win the Express Credit Futsal Winter League, although the X Men still have an outside chance of pipping them to the title.
The title race has come down to the two sides who have pulled away from the rest of the field following last weekend’s matches at the Windhoek Showgrounds.
Swakop had a great weekend, winning five of their six matches to complete their campaign at the top of the log on 34 points.
The X Men are second, three points behind, but with a far inferior goal difference, while Quality Futsal Club trail in third place on 18 points.
The X Men will now have to win their final match against Quality FC next Saturday by at least 10 goals to beat Swakop to the title on goal difference.
On Saturday, the two contenders met in a top of the log clash and the X men emerged 2-1 winners in a close encounter.
With both sides’ defences well organised, chances were few and far between, but the X Men’s Denzil Waters broke the deadlock when he scored from a quick counterattack just before halftime.
Swakop pushed hard with captain Waldron Theron and Marciano January coming close to scoring, but the X Men went further ahead when captain Clayton Panizza scored from a quickly taken freekick.
Matheus Humphries finally opened Swakop’s account after a swift counterattack with two minutes to go, but it was too little too late as the X Men ran out winners.
That temporarily put the X Men at the top of the log, but Swakop then went on a five-match winning streak, while the X Men dropped some crucial points, resulting in the coastal side regaining the lead.
Swakop beat Windhoek North FC 6-1, Chile FC 2-1, Patriots 3-0, SBS Trucking 8-1, and Galacticos 5-2.
The X Men however dropped points in a 2-1 defeat to Chile 2-1, and a 1-1 draw against the Patriots, although they beat Windhoek North 9-4.
In other Men’s Premier League results, Quality FC beat SBS Trucking 3-2, Galacticos beat Windhoek North 5-3, Chile beat SBS Trucking 5-1, Quality beat Galacticos 3-2, Galacticos beat the Patriots 6-2, Quality beat Windhoek North 5-3, Chile beat Patriots 5-3, and Patriots beat Quality 4-3.
