Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ministry of Industrialisation, and Trade and the Namibia Standards Institution (NSI) signed a memorandum of understanding on metrology services in Windhoek last Thursday.
Metrology is the science of measurements.
According to a media statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson Elijah Mukubonda, industrialisation minister Lucia Iipumbu signed the agreement on behalf of the ministry, while NSI chief executive officer Chie Wasserfall represented the standards institution.
Under the agreement, NSI was nominated as the agency to provide metrology services under the Metrology Act 1973 (Act No. 77 of 1973).
NSI will carry out the services on behalf of the director of metrology in the industrialisation ministry, as the institution possesses the required competencies and accreditation to carry out services related to weights and measures.
In accordance with section 7 of the Metrology Act, services for the metrology agency comprise the examination, approval, verification, calibration or certification of any measuring instruments and the keeping, maintaining, comparison, adjustment, establishment or value of any national measuring standards.
“We are confident that such cooperation will serve our common interests to strengthen, promote and develop synergy in weights and measurement systems and mechanisms that drive forward sustainable metrology services in the country that are core to the mandate of the Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade,” said Iipumbu.
The ministry has oversight over two sectors – industrialisation and trade, which are not only wide in scope, but also very critical for the realisation of the socio-economic development goals of Namibia.
The ministry administers a number of legislations, among them the Standards Act, which promotes the use of standards and quality assurance and control in the industry, commerce and public sectors; provides conformity assessment services; certifies product and personnel systems; inspects and tests products and materials; and legalises metrology and the enforcement of product labelling, weights and measures.
It is on this basis that the ministry signed the agreement on metrology services with NSI.
