Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Inspector General of the Namibian police, Joseph Shikongo, is appealing to road-users to acquaint themselves with road safety tips and save lives during the festive season.
The appeal comes after a worrisome number of 211 road accidents was reported countrywide from 22 November to 18 December.
According to Shikongo, the said accidents resulted in 37 fatalities and 415 injuries.
In 61 cases, vehicles overturned, while 59 accidents involved pedestrians and 56 cases were collisions.
There were also thirteen incidents in which vehicles crashed into fixed objects, seven fell or jumped from moving vehicles, four crashed into animals, four involved cyclists, whereas the cause of seven other accidents could not be determined.
“Despite the prevalence of road accidents, this year’s statistics show a slight decrease when compared to the same period last year,” said Shikongo.
He added that the Khomas Region reported the highest number of crashes (64) followed by Erongo with 28, Otjozondjupa (26) and Oshikoto (22).
With only five cases, the Kavango East Region recorded the least number of road accidents.
Shikongo reassured the public of Nampol’s commitment to enforce the traffic rules and regulations on public roads, with the aim of reducing accidents in the country.
Shikongo enumerated effective ways of reducing accidents and associated deaths on national roads:
– adhere to traffic rules and regulations;
– respect the speed limit;
– avoid overtaking at blind spots;
– don’t drink and drive;
– ensure the vehicle is roadworthy, and
– avoid driving when fatigued.
