Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security says Namibia and Botswana will begin 24-hour operations at the Trans-Kalahari/Mamuno border posts as of 1 April.
This was announced by the ministry’s executive director, Etienne Maritz, on Tuesday.
Maritz said the official launch of 24-hour operations will be carried out by home affairs minister Albert Kawana and Botswana’s finance minister Peggy Serame.
“The launch of the Trans-Kalahari/Mamuno border posts are very important for the economic development in the region,” Maritz said.
He said the Trans-Kalahari corridor links the port of Walvis Bay to Botswana’s capital, making it one of the busiest corridors.
“Due to the launch of 24-hour operations at these two border posts, transport companies are urged to temporarily cease the movement of trucks from 08h00 until 13h00,” he said.
Truck drivers are urged to use alternative routes such as the Ariamsvlei border post.
Previously, the two border posts opened at 07h00 and closed at 00h00.
In February, Namibia and Botswana signed an agreement introducing the use of identity cards to allow people of the two nations to cross borders.
