TransNamib employees protest against 'bullying'

Africa-Press – Namibia. TRANSNAMIB employees protested at the company’s Windhoek headquarters yesterday morning to express dissatisfaction with their working conditions.

Speaking on behalf of the employees, senior shop steward Elgiva Baptista, who handed over the petition, said employees are subjected to bullying, favouritism and nepotism daily.

Baptista added that the employees are demanding immediate action.

The petition called on the shareholders and the board to explain why they are harbouring looters, who are making working conditions unbearable.

“We are demanding that they recover from the executive the performance bonuses they splashed out on themselves illegally and unduly,” she added.

The employees are represented by their union, the Namibia Transport and Allied Workers’ Union.

Baptista demanded that the company apply its disciplinary policy and suspend the chief executive officer human capital and executive properties over matters already raised by the employees and supported by the EY investigation report recommendations.

She added that failure to do this, all personnel on suspension or unfairly dismissed must have their suspensions lifted and dismissals nullified.

The workers also demanded that the company reduce the bloated management with immediate effect from nine to six or seven.

The employees also demanded that the company investigate the 50% or more discount accorded clients travelling with the company.

“Make the succession policy a priority to afford upcoming aspiring employees to grow in the company and allow long-serving employees to enjoy their retirement,” the petition stated.

The employees gave the board 48 hours to respond to their petition and act accordingly.

A member of the TransNamib board, Gaenor Micheals, received the petition on behalf of the management.

Micheals said: “Unfortunately, the chairperson is unwell and the deputy chairperson is in South Africa at the moment.”

She added that the company has taken note of the 48 hours to respond and the board would provide the required feedback demanded by the petition.
