Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Tsumeb municipality in collaboration with Glomdalsmuseet in Norway will restore the Helvi Mpingana Kondombolo open-air museum to its former glory.

Since 2018, Glomdalsmuseet and Tsumeb municipality have collaborated to revitalize the cultural village in Tsumeb that focuses on the cultural diversity of Namibia.

Tsumeb municipality spokesperson Stella Imarwa-Nangolo said the project is safeguarded by the Museums Association of Namibia in collaboration with the Glomdal museum. The project is primarily funded by the Innlandet County Municipality in Norway as part of international cooperation with the Oshikoto region.

The cultural village was established in 1997 to promote various Namibian cultures to local residents and tourists. “The focus is on three components: Restoration of the traditional homesteads, developing and formalising governing documents and the establishment of a basic level of information to support self-guided visits,” she said.

Imarwa-Nangolo indicated that since 2019, they have been working closely with local stakeholders and representatives of ethnic groups to restore and rebuild several of the 11 different homesteads.

“In most cases, it has been possible to follow traditional methods, but in some cases, a mix between traditional materials and modern techniques remains necessary,” she added. She said the Tsumeb municipality is the owner of the museum and has been responsible for executing the project locally.
