Africa-Press – Namibia. OVER 200 youths from Tsumeb staged a peaceful demonstration demanding the town’s mayor Mathews Hangula and his council to step down.
The group says that the town is in total chaos because those steering the town were not born in Tsumeb and do not have the residents’ concerns at heart.
“We the community have lost faith and trust towards the local authority that has no remorse towards its inhabitants,” states the petition the group handed to the Mayor on Thursday.
The group added that they will be taking a vote of no confidence against the Mayor and his council because they are doing nothing in terms of service delivery.
They stated that the local authority “has failed in implementing the development and progress of the town”.
“The entrusted leadership is turning our town into a ghost town with no developmental activities taking place,” read the petition.
The group also requested the council to provide the outcome of the audit report for the financial year 2018/19, and for all those implicated in the report to be brought to book.
They also requested the council to consider writing off debts which have been accumulated by the pensioners and those that have long perished.
They also demanded that the town leadership consider giving priority to Tsumeb residents first for employment purposes.
Failure to provide them with satisfactory answers within five working days, the group said they will take up the matter with the Office of the Presidency to air their concerns on the challenges they face in the town.
Receiving the petition, Mayor Hangula, said together with his council members they shall go through the petition and get back to the leaders of the group, within the timeframe specified.
He added that they will see how the issues can be resolved amicably.
