Unam donates to Angolan refugees

Africa-PressNamibia. NAMIBIANS continue to open their hearts and hands to food insecure Angolan immigrants who are currently camping at Etunda near Ruacana. The University of Namibia (Unam) recently handed out food parcels and clothes to the refugees as part of its Care Initiative.

The Unam Care Initiative was established in 2019 with the aim of assisting communities in desperate need of help. Unam Vice Chancellor Professor Kenneth Matengu said the programme allows their students to go beyond learning and to play a part in nurturing and uplifting communities by giving back.

“Since February this year, we have been receiving a large number of foreign immigrants flocking to Etunda for food aid,” said governor of Omusati, Erginus Endjala, at the handing over ceremony.

Endjala added that currently, the Etunda Elcin Centre is home to over 2 400 Angolan nationals who fled hunger in their country. He noted that many of the refugees at the campsite have admitted to fleeing their country due to food shortages and drought. Endjala thanked Unam for joining the rest in rendering humanitarian assistance to the immigrants.
