Africa-Press – Namibia. UNEXPLODED ordnances (UXO), especially landmines, remain a concern particularly in the northern parts of the country, the Namibian police have warned.

This follows after several unexploded ordnances were discovered in former war zone areas of Ohangwena recently. This includes one mortar bomb, 74 rounds of live ammunition and 160 empty cartridges.

Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, head of Nampol’s public relations division, said the discovery was made recently during construction work being done alongside the main road between Eenhana and Okongo, a stretch of about 12 km.

Shikwambi said a team of Nampol’s Explosives Division was deployed to the area at the end of October. The demining operation started on 1 November and will conclude on 18 November.

“The Namibian nation is reminded of the slogan ‘Don’t touch it, Report it’ to ensure that lives are not lost,” she said. Shikwambi stated that most of the explosives found are of South African and former Soviet Union origin.
