Africa-Press – Namibia. RESIDENTS living in the south-eastern parts of Windhoek have been urged to take precaution against fires which have been blazing in the mountains surrounding Auasblick.
Chief of Emergency and Disaster Risk Management at the City of Windhoek, Raymond Kapia, said that the fire brigade extinguished the fires around Klein Windhoek and Ludwigsdorf, but the fire jumped to the southern end of the city in Auasblick.
“Our first mission is to save lives. However, the fires have not reached the properties yet. However, those who find their properties near the mountains should clear grass and bushes growing around their fences and turn on their sprinkling systems or have a water hose at hand,” Kapia said.
He added that the fire brigade is currently being assisted by the Namibian Police and all available members are helping towards the extinguishing of the fire. Kapia explained that an estimated 1 400 hectares of land have burned since yesterday.
The fires, are not only concentrated to Windhoek. According to the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, a satellite image taken from their AFIS system shows that there are about 13 veldt fires blazing across the different regions.
The environment ministry urged members of the public to use fire with care to preclude the destruc
tion of grazing land and to safeguard the lives of Namibians. The environment ministry said that to date, 1 498 385 million hectares of land have been ravaged by veldt fires, whilst in 2021, 3.4 million hectares burned.
