Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Walvis Bay #Nisa Damaradi group launched its unique blue-and-beige-coloured Damara traditional dress at the town on Saturday.
The dress colours represent the blue ocean and dunes.
The launch event started with a gala dinner on Friday, followed by a parade where the women took the dress onto the streets of Kuisebmond on Saturday morning, led by the Namibian Navy brass band and drum majorettes.
The dress was officially launched at the Narraville Community Hall in the presence of the Damara king Justus /Uruhe //Garoëb and his wife, Emgard //Garoes, as well as representatives of the Topnaar community and Erongo regional governor Neville Andre.
The chairperson of the group, Renathe Dawids, said it is important for mothers to introduce young girls to tradition so that they can understand and respect their inheritance.
“We must lead them by showing them how to form a bond with their cultural identity, build self-esteem, be humble and honour their bodies. You need to know where you are coming from to know where you are heading,” she said.
The group’s name #Nisa Damaradi means proud Damara women.
