Weather disrupts para-swimmer's heroic attempt

Africa-Press – Namibia. GIDEON ‘The Amphibian Namibian’ Nasilowski’s daring Robben Island Challenge ended short of the intended target due to bad weather off the Cape’s coast today.

Para-swimmer Nasilowski planned to tackle a 7,5-kilometre swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand in South Africa, as part of his ongoing awareness campaign for disability in Namibia and beyond.

“Unfortunately, the weather did not play along with us today. The wind and swell were just to[o] strong and Gideon was not moving forward for more than 40 minutes,” said a post on his Facebook page.

“A call was made to end the swim plus/minus 3km from Big Bay, as Gideon and Buff were just moving more and more north and not forward.

“In total, Gideon swam 9,7 km in 5 hours, 21 minutes and 56 seconds, [which is] still an amazing effort and achievement.

“This is not the end, we shall try again and keep an eye on The Amphibian Namibian in future.

“To everyone out there that supports The Amphibian Namibian, thank you for your support and messages.”
