WHS Old Boys Cricket Club and CCD Tigers got off to winning starts when the new Namibian Premier League 50-over cricket league got underway over the weekend.

Defending champions Old Boys comfortably beat MR24/7 Welwitschia by eight wickets at the WHS field, while CCD beat Trustco United by seven wickets at the CCD field.

MR24/7 Welwitschias won the toss and opted to bat, and got off to a steady start with Tawanda Ngwenya and Marc Stehle putting on 32 runs for the first wicket.

Malan Kruger, however, got the breakthrough, dismissing Stehle (10) and Samson Chivi (2) in quick succession.

Ngwenya (22) and Herman van Zyl revived the innings with a 39-run third wicket partnership, but when Van Zyl was bowled by Melrich Robyn for a top score of 47 off 30 balls (2×4, 5×6), Welwitschias’ lower order crumbled as they lost their last seven wickets for only 30 runs.

Jaco le Roux added 19 and Simon Shikongo 13 before the whole team was out for 139 off 33,5 overs.

Robyn was Old Boys’ top bowler, taking three wickets for 28 runs in five overs, while Kruger took 2/28 and Dian Jacobs 2/6.

Old Boys’ openers Malan Kruger and Shaun Fouche wasted little time in chasing down the target as they put on 50 runs for the opening wicket in only four overs, before Fouche was dismissed for 31 off 20 balls (3×3, 3×6).

JP Kotze was run out for only five, but JW Visagie joined Kruger to take Old Boys to a commanding victory as they reached 141/2 off only 10,3 overs.

Kruger remained not out on 65 off 34 balls (10×4, 3×6), while Visagie was not out on 22 off nine balls (3×6).

At the CCD field, the home side eased to a comfortable seven-wicket win against Trustco United.

After being sent in to bat, most of United’s top order batters got amongst the runs, but no one stayed long enough to build a big score.

Henry Hayes scored 25, Chris Freeman 27, Hendrik van der Walt 28 and Damon Coetzee 27 not out, but the going was slow and when the whole team was out they only had 147 on the board off 42,4 overs.

Norbert Manyande was CCD’s best bowler, taking 4/20 off 8,5 overs, while Mauritius Ngupita (2/27), Takunda Matimbe (2/37) and Quincy Beukes (2/32) took two wickets each.

In reply, CCD got off to a strong start as Manyande and Ryan Moffet put on 59 for the first wicket.

Chris Freeman snapped up two wickets in three balls, dismissing Moffet for 21 and Calum Gunning for a duck, but Joshua Julius joined Manyande to put CCD on course for victory with a 76-run third wicket partnership.

Manyande was eventually out for 66 off 93 balls (11×4), but Julius remained not out on 47 (6×4), as they reached 148/3 off 35 overs to win by seven wickets.
