Africa-Press – Namibia. TWO women judges of Namibia’s High Court and a judge of Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court have been appointed by president Hage Geingob as acting judges of the Supreme Court, the Judicial Service Commission announced yesterday.

The president has appointed High Court judges Hannelie Prinsloo and Esi Schimming-Chase and Zimbabwean Constitutional Court judge Rita Makarau as acting judges of the appeals court from the start of April this year to the end of March 2024, the commission stated.

Prinsloo and Schimming-Chase will be the first Namibian women to serve as judges of the country’s top court. Three former judges of South Africa’s Constitutional Court and a judge of Zimbabwe’s Supreme Court are the only women judges who have previously served as acting judges of appeal in Namibia’s Supreme Court. Prinsloo and Schimming-Chase have been serving as High Court judges since July 2017 and April 2021, respectively.

The commission also announced that the president has appointed three acting judges for Namibia’s High Court.

They are Ramon Maasdorp, who has been practising law as a member of the Society of Advocates of Namibia since 2009, long-serving judge Collins Parker, and a retired judge of Zimbabwe’s High Court, Moses Chinhengo. Maasdorp is appointed as an acting judge from 16 April to the end of July.

Parker’s appointment is from the start of April to the end of this year, and Chinhengo is to serve on the High Court bench from 18 September to the end of December.
