MINISTER of information and communications technology (ICT), Peya Mushelenga, says young people should be at the helm of growing the economy, supported by an array of interventions.
Executive director of information and communications technology Roselia Penda yesterday spoke on behalf of Mushelenga at the opening of MTC’s innovation centre and mobile home at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust).
Mushelenga said young people should be part of this development to grow their minds and cultivate ideas.
“This is especially as we recover from a catastrophic global pandemic where we need to give expression to how the role of technology is advancing, the growth of our young people, and how we as a government can contribute to this,” he said.
The innovation hub aims to be a centre for testing, building and showcasing new technologies and consumer ICT applications, while the mobile home will offer customers services such as SIM card registration, account payments and top-ups, device sales, and self-help services.
Speaking at the same event was Nust’s vice chancellor, Erold Naomab.
He said the aim of this development is to ensure that technological and scientific developments are available to a wider audience.
“It gives me great pleasure to note that in this short period, we have made notable strides towards fulfilling the mandate of this ecosystem, which is to facilitate a functional technological inspired space for the university, industries, development partners and entrepreneurs,” Naomab said.
MTC managing director Licky Erasmus said while the nation ought to celebrate the milestone between the two institutions, industries need to accelerate and become fit for the fourth Industrial Revolution.
“This is an innovation hub where industry experts and academics will be appreciating and leveraging synergies to transform innovative ideas and concepts to life,” he said.
He said the centre is also a national centre of engaged excellence that will explore and fuse innovation with the transformative power of technology.
