Youth Games called off

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday said the MTC National Youth Games will not be held this year.

THE Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday said the MTC National Youth Games will not be held this year.

The games’ third edition was set for 11 to 17 December in Windhoek, but were postponed to next year due to unspecified “unavoidable circumstantial events and circumstances”, the commission said.

“This decision has not been taken lightly, and we would like to reiterate our commitment to progressing sport and seeing growth in the sporting fraternity, particularly considering that this event accelerates athlete development at this level,” chief administrator Simataa Mwiya said in a statement.

The announcement is in stark contrast to the commission’s tune in September, when it said it was preparing to host “a flawless” competition to make up for the shambolic 2020 edition at Rietfontein.

The second edition will be remembered for unsavoury accommodation, plus equally appalling meals for athletes and officials, which forced parents to come to the youngsters’s aid.

“Shocking as it may be, I wish to request that we remain positive and take this as a blessing in disguise, as it will now give us ample time to better prepare and bring even more partners on the event and make it even bigger and better,” said NSC marketing and public relations officer Chalo Chainda.
