Africa-Press – Nigeria. Pope Leo XIV has said the welfare of Venezuelans should take precedence over all other interests, following the removal of President Nicolas Maduro in a US-led operation.
Speaking after his Angelus prayer at St Peter’s Square on Sunday, the first American pope told the crowd that “the welfare of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over all other considerations.”
He said the situation in Venezuela should lead to “overcoming violence and embarking on paths of justice and peace,” while also “guaranteeing the sovereignty of the country.”
The pope stressed the need to respect the rule of law and human rights, saying it was important to “ensure the rule of law enshrined in the Constitution, respecting the human and civil rights of each and every person.”
He added that Venezuelans should work together “to build a peaceful future of collaboration, stability, and harmony,” with special concern for “the poorest who are suffering because of the difficult economic situation.”
Pope Leo’s comments came a day after US special forces captured Maduro in Caracas.
US President Donald Trump later said the United States would administer Venezuela and make use of its oil reserves.
