Africa-Press – Nigeria. Scores of former teachers in Adamawa State on Thursday protested at the Government House, demanding the payment of 29 months’ unpaid salaries.

The demonstrators, who were previously employed by the Adamawa State Post-Primary Schools Management Board (ASPMB), staged a peaceful march, expressing anger over what they described as years of neglect despite court judgements.

Waving placards bearing various messages and slogans, the protesters accused the state government of ignoring legal rulings that ordered the settlement of their entitlements.

The members of the group, said to number at least 674, were originally recruited during the administration of former governor Murtala Nyako but were later disengaged by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who maintained that their employment process was flawed. The affected teachers, however, have repeatedly dismissed this claim, insisting their dismissal was unjust.

Addressing journalists during the protest, the spokesperson for the group, Ismail Bello, described the difficult conditions many of the teachers have endured since their dismissal.

He explained that the protest became necessary after the state government allegedly failed to comply with judgments delivered by both the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal, which directed that the workers be paid.

The protesters also accused the government of deliberately disregarding the rule of law, warning that their patience is running out.

As at the time of filing this report, the Adamawa State Government has not issued an official response regarding the demonstration.
