SECURITY forces in Nigeria were accused of deliberately sabotaging the battle to defeat Boko Haram by the governor of Borno State in the country’s north-east today.
Babagana Zulum was speaking days after an assassination attempt was made against him near Lake Chad, when his convoy was attacked by militants.
Boko Haram were blamed for the attack. But Mr Zulum suggested soldiers were behind the assault and accused the security forces of sabotage.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari needed to know that sabotage was hindering efforts to defeat the jihadist group, he said.
The governor also raised questions over corruption, asking why the army was stopping thousands of displaced people from returning to their land while soldiers were cultivating the fields.
According to the United Nations, the Boko Haram insurgency has displaced nearly 2.4 million people in the Lake Chad Basin.
Boko Haram has been fighting in north-east Nigeria since 2009, with tens of thousands killed.
The jihadists and their myriad offshoots have also launched attacks in Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria, with security forces struggling to contain the violence.
