“Management, Staff and Students remain eternally grateful to the Hon Speaker for accepting to deliver the lecture despite his crowded schedule,” he added.

“As indicated above, a total of 7,991 graduands comprising of First Degree, 6,625; Postgraduate Diploma, 212; Masters’ Degree, 720; Ph.D, 434 and Doctorate awardees have been found worthy of this ceremony,” he said.

He also announced that three distinguished Nigerians will receive honorary doctorate degrees during the convocation.

“As part of the tradition, the Visitor, Council and Senate have approved the award of Honorary Doctoral Degrees (Honoris Causa) to three distinguished national and global personalities who have recorded remarkable achievements in the transmutation of the Country,” he said.

The honourees are: Rt. Hon. Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, to receive an Honorary Doctorate Award for Legislative Practice; Chief Dr. Paulinus Ozonnagbo, CEO of Polystar Electronics, for Business Administration; and Senator Osita Ngwu, Senate Minority Whip, for Governance and Public Policy.

Prof. Okolie commended Governor Peter Mbah for his continued support, noting that the state government has approved N1.4 billion for the perimeter fencing of the university.

Meanwhile, during an interactive session with journalists, Okolie urged students of the university to key into the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

He said whereas students in other parts of the country had taken it seriously and were reaping the benefits, only few persons had keyed into the scheme in the university.

The Vice Chancellor then charged the students to change their mentality towards the scheme.
