The deregistration of some political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was on Thursday, June 11, upheld by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court affirmed INEC’s earlier decision in a ruling delivered by Justice Anwuli Chikere who dismissed the suit filed by the parties that challenged the powers of the commission to deregister them.

Justice Chikere ruled that the electoral body rightly acted based on the provision of section 225(a) of the Nigerian Constitution.

INEC, acting on the provision of the Nigerian constitution, registered the parties.
