Danish Royal House announce new titles of members after Queen's decision to abdicate

Africa-Press – Nigeria. After Queen Margrethe II unexpectedly announced her abdication during her New Year’s Eve address, the Danish Royal House shared the new titles of its key members. The royal house posted a statement on Tuesday outlining how the roles of the family are set to change.

The Danish queen will officially step down on 14 January – a decision which shocked the country – after 52 years of rule, according to AFP.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark will take over as King, with Crown Princess Mary becoming Queen and their 18-year-old son Prince Christian becoming Crown Prince, according to the statement.

“The royal couple [Frederik and Mary] will henceforth bear the title of King and Queen of Denmark,” read the statement, originally written in Danish.

“After the change of throne, Her Majesty the Queen will continue to be Majesty and bear the title Her Majesty Queen Margrethe,” it added.

There will not be a formal coronation, but instead an extraordinary cabinet meeting, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen presenting the new king from a balcony, according to AFP.

The Lord Chamberlain of The Royal House position will also be taken over by Christian Schønau, who is currently the Chief of the Court, another statement from Tuesday said.

Queen Margrethe II enjoyed significant popularity in Denmark during her reign. A recent poll indicated that more than 80% of Danes supported her, and another poll indicated she was the most popular royal member, AFP reported.

The 83-year-old queen is Europe’s longest-serving monarch, having ascended the throne in 1972, according to Reuters.

During her New Year’s Eve speech, she noted that her back surgery in February 2023 made her think of the royal house’s future.
