Edo: Police begin investigation on kidnapping allegation against officer, traditional ruler

Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Edo State Police Command said it has launched investigations into the allegations of the involvement of its officer in kidnapping in Uromi, in Esan North East Local Government Area of the state.

The commissioner, who disclosed this at a media briefing in Benin City, also added that a traditional ruler is alleged to be involved in the kidnapping. Adegboye added that the incident resulted in a protest by the residents of the community on Monday.

It was gathered that vigilantes and hunters in the area engaged a kidnapping gang in a shootout while attempting to kidnap a driver and passengers.

In the process, one kidnap suspect was killed, one was arrested, while others escaped. It was further gathered that the arrested suspect mentioned a police officer from Uromi division and some locals as his accomplices.

The mentioning of the personalities prompted the youths in the locality to take to the street and call for the arrest of those allegedly implicated. Speaking on the incident, the State Police Commissioner said the command was aware of it, and that the officer is under very discreet investigation.

“We got wind of the officer who has been mentioned by the arrested kidnapper. As I am talking to you, some youths are on the street protesting the involvement of indigenes – maybe a traditional ruler or whatever – in cases of kidnapping in the area.

“We are not taking it with a pinch of salt. The case is under discreet investigation, and whoever is involved will be dealt with according to the law of the land,” he said.

He assured that the police would make their findings known to the public.
