– Atiku Abubakar said the Nigerian government must reside beyond mere speech and take decisive action to address insecurity in the country
– The PDP presidential candidate in the 2019 election recommended community policing system to end the killings
– Atiku added that the community policing must be adapted to suit the culture and history of each of the six geo-political zones
Nigeria’s former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says Nigeria should return to community policing “in order to stem the tide of insecurity”.
Atiku made the suggestion via a post on his official Facebook page on Monday, July 15.
The former vice president said he recalled that the criminal rate in Nigeria was small when he was young.
He attributed the relative peace to community police system which he said Nigeria must return to if it is serious about putting an end to the spate of insecurity being currently experienced in the country.
“When I was a child, Nigeria had little crime. We did not depend on police from Lagos or Kaduna. We had a community police system. Nigeria must return to community policing, adapted to suit the culture and history of each of the 6 zones, in order to stem the tide of insecurity,” he said.
Atiku added that the government’s response to killings must go beyond mere talk, adding that decisive action must be taken to protect the lives of citizens.
He said: “Our response to the killings of our citizens cannot be just talk, talk, and talk. We must take decisive action to protect the lives of all citizens, not just prominent ones. There has to be change, because if we continue with the way things are, we will get the same results.”
