Africa-Press – Nigeria. Cholera is transmitted directly through food or water contaminated with faecal material from an infected person due to poor sanitation and hygiene services practiced in the locations. Most infected people develop no symptoms or only mild diarrhoea.

It is also one the killer disease as identified by the World health organization.

Kano State is the most populated State in Nigeria according the the last censuses conducted In the Country.

Recently the state witnessed suspected cholera out break which was confirmed by the State Government through the Ministry of Health.

No fewer than five persons have lost their lives following cholera outbreak recorded in Kano State.

The State’s Commissioner of Health, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa confirmed this to newsmen during press briefing on Cholera outbreak and response held in the state on Tuesday last week.

Tsanyawa said it recorded a total number of 189 cases out which five lost their lives.

According to him, “On the 16th April 2022 a case of watery diarrhea and vomiting suspected to be due to cholera was reported in Dambatta ,one of the 44 local Governments of the state which was promptly investigated. Since then, we had a total of 189 cases in 20 Local Government areas out of which 184 have fully recovered, 0 active case and 5 deaths.

“It will interest you to know that last year by now we recorded 12,116 cases across the state with 329 deaths. This is as a result of the prompt and multi-sectoral collaborative response by the state,” Dr. Tsanyawa stated.

The Commissioner however called on people of the state to imbibe personal and environmental hygiene to avoid coming down with cholera outbreak and other diseases in the state.

“The Kano State government under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is fully committed to providing adequate and qualitative healthcare services to the good people of the state in order to eliminate cholera outbreak and other diseases in the state,” Dr. Tsanyawa said.

Open depiction should be check mate as one of the major cause of the cholera epidemic in Kano State.

Muhammad Hamisu Mai iyali , Community health and disease Control Expert

Muhammad Hamisu Mai iyali is an expert in community health and diseases control that served Kano State Primary Health care Agency for more than thirty years before his retirement.

He attributed the cholera out break in Kano state to open depiction as the habit is a regular phenomenon in some communities as he cited examples with Garun Malam and Kura Local Government areas.

Mai iyali said that depicting water ways in such areas is very common which really contributed to the cholera outbreak .

He called on Government and donor organizations to come to the aid of the affected communities by providing toilets.

Mai iyali also identified regular sensitization by community health workers as very critical towards educating the public on the preventive majors such as cleaning their environment ,food,and what ever leafs they are going to eat.

The health expert also urged the public to be more conscious about their health by visiting health centres on regularly basis and when ever they experience any change in their body system to ensure they receive proper treatment from right health personals.
