A former deputy chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Alhaji Lawan Maina, has made case for the Northeast zone to produce the Senate President for the 9th National Assembly, as compensation for the devastation visited on the region by insurgency and banditry.
Maina said the zone is ready to support the aspiration of former senate minority leader, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume to become the next Senate President.
Maina said this in Abuja, noting that major stakeholders in Borno have resolved to support Ndume because he possesses requisite capacity and temperament to ensure stability and good working relationship between the executive and legislature.
He dispelled the rumour making the round that President Muhammadu Buhari had endorsed the current senate leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan for the position.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain said the zone recorded the second highest number of votes cast for President Buhari in the just concluded elections, adding that Ndume as a member of the Campaign committee worked assiduously alongside others to give victory to the party in the zone.
Meanwhile, incumbent Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, has declared interest in the Number Three office, even as he promised to abide by his party’s, the All Progressives Congress (APC) zoning arrangements.
He equally expressed optimism that APC would not repeat mistakes of 2015 that made it impossible for the party’s preferred candidate to emerge.
Addressing a press conference, Friday, alongside 10 Senators-elect, Lawan harped on the need to respect party supremacy, saying APC has learnt from its past mistakes.
