Africa-Press – Nigeria. One person has been confirmed dead while five others are trapped after part of a private rice mill collapsed in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the NIA-AGRI rice mill, where a section of the building suddenly gave way, trapping workers under heavy metal and rubble.

Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Umar Abubakar Tafida, visited the site shortly after the collapse was reported and ordered immediate rescue efforts. He led a government delegation to assess the situation and monitor the rescue operation.

The project engineer at the site told the delegation that at least one worker lost his life in the incident, while five others were trapped under the debris as of Tuesday evening.

Rescue teams from the Kebbi State Fire Service, alongside other emergency agencies, have been working non-stop to reach the trapped workers.

The deputy governor expressed the state government’s sympathy to the management and staff of the rice mill and assured them of full support until the rescue operation is concluded.

He said the cause of the collapse is still unknown and that a thorough investigation would be carried out after the rescue operation to determine what went wrong.
