Africa-Press – Nigeria. The streets of Lagos Island are set to come alive this Easter Sunday, 20 April, as the historic Lagos Fanti Carnival returns, celebrating over a century of Afro-Brazilian heritage and the cultural identity of the Lagos Island community.
First held in 1890, the Fanti Carnival is one of the longest-running cultural processions in Nigeria, established by Afro-Brazilian descendants who settled in Lagos after returning from Brazil in the 19th century.
The event has since evolved into a public display of music, dance, and traditional art forms tied to the city’s unique history.
This year’s edition, according to organisers, will feature three major attractions: an Afro-Brazilian Food Showcase, a Heritage Art Exhibition, and the main Lagos Fanti Carnival Parade.
The event will also include performances from local musicians, dancers, and cultural groups. Traditional masquerades, elaborate costumes, and samba-inspired drum ensembles will take centre stage in a display that highlights the longstanding ties between Nigeria and Brazil.
In a statement issued ahead of the event, the organising committee described the carnival as “a platform for celebrating the enduring legacy of the Afro-Brazilian community and the shared cultural history of Lagos.”
Preparations for the carnival have been ongoing in participating communities, with costume-making, rehearsals, and cultural workshops forming part of the build-up.
