Africa-Press – Nigeria. A global affairs analyst, Paul Ejime, has said that the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has not done enough to contain the political crisis in the Benin Republic.
Ejime made the statement on Wednesday while responding to questions in an interview on The Morning Brief, a programme on Channels Television monitored .
DAILY POST reports that there was a coup attempt in Cotonou, the capital of the Benin Republic, following an attack on President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo neighbourhood early Sunday, 7 December 2025.
Responding, Ejime said, “I survived the coup in Guinea-Bissau as an observer, and then barely made it to get out of that country. And here we are with the Republic of Benin.
“I think it is time that ECOWAS stopped talking. The time for them to talk was several years ago, but they have allowed things to get to this level.”
He continued: “You have talked about deploying standby force, that is the highest you can do, using force. But why allow things to get to this level where you have to begin to use force? You could have done preventive diplomacy.
“You could have done the nipping things in the board, for instance, where all these things are happening today, the danger signals have always been there.”
