Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Executive Chairman, Zamfara State Internal Revenue Service, Alhaji Akilu Dama Bungudu, has lamented that only 21 percent of eligible tax payers in the state pay their taxes regularly.
Speaking with DAILY POST in Gusau, the state capital, Bungudu said that some eligible persons refused to pay taxes regularly while some others do not pay the right amounts when due.
He further explained that the service was facing serious resistance from the prominent people in the state in terms of tax payment.
“Most of the prominent persons do not care to pay their taxes eve though they have the money, forgetting that the government uses the tax payers money to develop the state,” he added.
The chairman explained that it is when the eligible tax payers pay their taxes as at when due that the government can implement capital projects that improve their socio economic status.
“Most of the prominent persons in the state were tax evaders, only 21 percent of eligible tax payers pay their taxes regularly,” he added.
Alhaji Baungudu noted that the revenue service has designed strategies on public enlightenment to educate the public on the importance of paying their taxes regularly.
He noted that his organization has the intension to initiate various incentive programs to enhance service delivery and staff welfare, pointing out that the programs would include training and retraining, bonuses and personal commendations to staff that perform well.
The chairman said the training and retraining of staff was informed when he interacted with some people who said that they have no idea of paying tax, believing that they were exempted from paying taxes as traders or farmers.
