Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Senate Committee overseeing the North Central Development Commission has approved the commission’s proposed N140 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year.

The endorsement followed a budget defence session held at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, where the commission’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Cyril Yiltsen Tsenyil, presented details of the spending plan.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Director of Corporate Services, James Uloko.

Dr Tsenyil told the committee that approximately 86 per cent of the proposed allocation is earmarked for capital projects, while the remaining funds will cover personnel and overhead costs.

He explained that the 2026 proposal is intended to strengthen the commission’s operational base and implement strategic initiatives aimed at delivering sustainable development across the North Central region.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Titus Zam, said the strong capital component of the budget holds significant promise for the region if effectively implemented.

He noted that the panel had carefully scrutinised the estimates and would exercise its oversight responsibility to ensure that resources are deployed to critical sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, empowerment programmes and economic growth.

Other senators who participated in the review commended the commission’s development focus but urged it to take into account the security challenges confronting parts of the North Central.

They called for targeted interventions to support displaced persons and address disruptions to livelihoods and economic activities.

The committee also highlighted the need for sustained stakeholder engagement to secure community buy-in and enhance the overall success of the commission’s programmes.
