2027: Oyo PDP leaders back Makinde despite defections

Africa-Press – Nigeria. The executive members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Oyo North Senatorial District have reaffirmed their loyalty to Governor Seyi Makinde, declaring that the party remains united and strong despite recent defections.

In a communiqué issued after a strategic meeting held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and made available to journalists on Monday, the party leaders emphasized that the defection of Senator Ayoola Agboola and a few of his supporters would not weaken the PDP’s structure or popularity in the region.

Agboola, who recently announced his resignation from the party, is a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs (2007–2011) and was the only PDP senator from the South-West between 2011 and 2015.

The PDP leaders, however, insisted that the party remains focused on consolidating its dominance in the state ahead of future elections.

The meeting, presided over by the Oyo North PDP Senatorial Chairman and former lawmaker, Yinusa Yusuff, unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Governor Makinde’s leadership and the state party structure.

“We declare our total and support for our great party, the PDP, under the dynamic leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde,” the communiqué read in part.

The leaders also downplayed the impact of Agboola’s defection, describing it as a move driven by personal ambition rather than genuine political conviction.

According to the communiqué, “The defection of Senator Agboola and a few others will not affect the PDP in Oyo North. Most of them played little or no significant role in the party’s victory during the 2023 general elections. Their exit is merely a pursuit of selfish political interests.”

They also accused Agboola of imposing council chairmen and party executives in Oke-Ogun during his tenure, noting that his latest decision to leave the PDP was a continuation of self-serving politics.

“The people of Oyo North are politically enlightened and will not allow personal interests to derail the collective progress of the zone, which has continued to witness unprecedented development under Governor Makinde,” the communiqué added.
