Africa-Press – Nigeria. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a six-month tenure extension for the party’s caretaker committee executives in Ekiti and Osun states.
The decision was taken on Friday during the party’s 8th National Convention and ratified by delegates, the convention being the party’s highest decision-making body.
Sen. Barau Jibrin, representing Kano North, who moved the motion, explained that the tenures of the current caretaker committees at the ward, local government and state levels were due to expire at the end of March 2026.
However, he noted that ongoing political developments made it impracticable to organise fresh congresses at the moment.
According to him, extending the tenure will ensure administrative stability and allow the party to properly coordinate preparations for upcoming congresses and future electoral activities in the affected states.
“The extension is expedient in the overall interest of the party to allow for proper coordination, consolidation and preparation for the conduct of congresses,” Jibrin said.
The motion was seconded by Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, and was unanimously approved by the delegates.
In a related development, the convention also dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) to pave the way for the election of new national officers.
The motion for the dissolution was moved by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Abdulkarim Kana, who cited Article 13.1 of the APC constitution. It was seconded by the Deputy National Secretary, Prof. Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.
Similarly, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, moved a motion for the adoption of consensus as the primary mode of electing new national officers.
He said adopting a defined mode of election would guide the proceedings and ensure the process reflects the collective will of party members.
The motion was seconded by Kaduna State Governor and Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Sen. Uba Sani.
Also at the convention, Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved a motion for the formal adoption and ratification of ward, local government, state and zonal congresses previously conducted across the country.
Akpabio said the congresses were carried out in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and the party’s guidelines, strengthening the party’s grassroots structure.
The motion was seconded by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma.
All the motions presented at the convention were unanimously adopted by delegates.
