Adamawa Committee Upholds Man's Jail Sentence for Theft

Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee, a judicial team established to decongest correctional centres in the state, has upheld a two-year jail term imposed on a man accused of stealing 20 crates of beer.

The 30-year-old man, Ibrahim Usman, was initially convicted and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Upper Area Court in Hong on the charge of taking 20 crates of beer at Wuro Bokki in Hong LGA, where he was arrested and arraigned in court.

The convict was serving his jail term at Hong Correctional Centre when the Jail Delivery Committee visited as part of its ongoing working tour of correctional centres.

On his appearance before the committee, headed by the Adamawa State Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, the convict confirmed the commission of the crime.

Although the committee is primarily tasked with reviewing cases with a view to granting pardons to eligible inmates, the overall aim being to reduce the excessively large populations of inmates at the state’s correctional centres, it declined to review Ibrahim Usman’s sentence.

The Hong Correctional Centre currently houses 94 inmates, almost double its 50-inmate capacity.
