Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has appealed to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to urgently reconnect the hospital to the national grid, warning that continued blackout could lead to more patients’ deaths.
The appeal followed reports that some patients in critical care lost their lives after the hospital was abruptly disconnected from power supply over outstanding electricity bills.
In a statement signed by the hospital’s Head of Information Unit, Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, AKTH expressed sadness over the deaths and explained that it has been making regular payments to KEDCO from its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). Part of the same IGR, she noted, is also used to purchase diesel for on-site power generation to support healthcare delivery.
“The Management of AKTH appeals to KEDCO to support its healthcare delivery services by restoring electricity supply to the hospital, even as we take steps to defray the outstanding bills,” Dutse said.
She stressed that the hospital is committed to settling its obligations, but urged KEDCO to consider the critical nature of medical services and the lives at stake.
The disconnection, sources said, has disrupted several essential services, putting patients on life-support machines and other critical care facilities at serious risk.
