Africa-Press – Nigeria. Former Niger State Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Niger State, Hon. Jonathan Vatsa, has urged the federal government to urgently establish a military base and deploy marine police in Agwara Local Government Area to curb terrorist attacks.
This call comes in the wake of the recent massacre of traders at Kasunwa Deji Market in Borgu, where 42 people were killed.
Vatsa, who made the statement in Minna, emphasized that Agwara’s strategic location along the River Niger makes it a critical security hotspot, with terrorists exploiting the waterway to escape and transit.
In a statement on Tuesday titled “Urgent Call for the Establishment of Naval Base and Deployment of Marine Police in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State,” the APC chieftain noted that a military base would secure the river corridor, deny terrorists access, and provide rapid response capabilities.
“Following repeated incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and violent assaults, particularly the tragic event at St. Mary Catholic Missionary School in Papiri, it is imperative for the federal government to establish a Nigerian military base in Agwara and deploy marine police units to the region to ensure the safety of residents.
“Moreso, intelligence and security reports consistently show that criminal groups and bandits exploit the River Niger as an escape and transit route, crossing freely after attacking communities, schools, and travelers,” he observed.
The former commissioner for Information also warned that insecurity along the River Niger not only threatens lives but undermines agriculture, interstate commerce, education, and national unity.
“The persistent security challenges facing Niger and neighboring states require urgent, decisive, and strategic intervention by the federal government.
“The current security situation is not something the state government can manage alone,” the APC chieftain maintained.
Vatsa further noted that a secured riverine community will restore confidence, attract investment, and reaffirm the government’s commitment to protecting citizens.
