Africa-Press – Nigeria. Troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade on Thursday survived an ambush by terrorists while returning from a routine patrol around Wajiroko in the Azir-Multe axis of Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State.
A statement issued on Friday by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, said the patrol, led by the Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen. M. Uba, came under heavy fire from insurgents near the fringes of the Sambisa Forest.
According to the statement, the troops, supported by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), repelled the attack with superior firepower, forcing the terrorists to flee and abandon their mission.
However, two soldiers and two CJTF members were killed in the encounter.
The Nigerian Army dismissed online reports alleging the abduction of the Brigade Commander, describing the claims as fake and urging the public to disregard them.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops for their bravery and resilience, while extending condolences to the families of the deceased.
He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to ongoing counterterrorism operations in the North-East.
