Crisis looms as sacked Plateau lawmakers plot to return to Assembly

Africa-Press – Nigeria. A new political crisis is brewing in Plateau State as 16 members of the state House of Assembly sacked by the Court of Appeal have vowed to return to the House despite the court judgments that nullified their elections.

The Appeal Court had sacked the 16 members because their party lacked the structure to sponsor candidates in the last general elections.

The sacked lawmakers made this known on Monday during a press briefing in Jos, the state capital.

Led by Ishaku Maren, the sacked lawmakers claimed that the Supreme Court judgment, which validated the election of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, had also qualified them to remain members of the Assembly.

The lawmakers said they would resume at the House on Tuesday when the Assembly is expected to reconvene from the two-month recess.

Governor Mutfwang had on Friday, after visiting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, told State House correspondents that political and legal solutions were being explored to address the alleged injustice meted out to the PDP lawmakers sacked by the Court of Appeal.
