EFCC urged to charge Ex-Chairman Bawa to court, demands DSS investigation report

Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been urged to urgently arraign its former Chairman, Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, over multiple allegations of corruption leveled against him.

This call was made by the Coalition of Activists Against Corruption in Nigeria, CAACIN, through a statement issued on Thursday morning.

In the statement signed by the Coalition’s Spokesperson, Comrade Ahmed Aliyu, the Department of State Services, DSS, was also challenged to release the full report of their investigation into Bawa, following his detention and interrogation for over four months in 2023.

“It is inconceivable to detain a man of his stature for five months without substantial grounds. We call on the DSS to make their findings public. Multiple corruption allegations against Bawa were known to both the EFCC and DSS. Nigerians cannot afford for these serious issues to be swept under the carpet.

“Therefore, we demand the DSS publish the full report of their investigation, the EFCC immediately charge Abdulrasheed Bawa to court, and the Commission remove those brought in by Bawa to cleanse the institution,” the Coalition insisted.

Recall that President Tinubu suspended Abdulrasheed Bawa as Acting EFCC Chairman in June 2023, just two weeks into his administration.

On the same day, the DSS took Bawa into custody, detaining him at Yellow House for 134 days without publicly disclosing reasons or the outcome of their probe.
