Africa-Press – Nigeria. Some Abuja residents have explained the reason for voters’ apathy as voting began in Dawaki/LEA polling unit of the Bwari Area for the chairmanship and councilorship election on Saturday.

A resident, Ayo Omodeinde, said there has always been voter apathy in FCT because people do not identify with their local government.

“LGA is the closest to the people, who ought to identify with it, but in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. This is the first after my service,” he said.

On his part, Ifeanyi Nwabianne said voters already presume the election has been rigged, which is the reason for the apathy.

“This is voter apathy because the leaders are not doing the right thing. Voters already presume the election has been rigged.

The Dawaki/LEA polling unit has five polling units: 72, 068, 069, 067, and 004 but as of the time of filling this report, only a handful of voters have approached the election venues.

The Independent National Electoral Commission presiding officers across the polling units who preferred anonymity confirmed that voting commenced at exactly 8:30am, but expressed concern that only a few voters were on the ground as of 10:00am.

The FCT minister declared Friday a public holiday while police restricted movement on Saturday.
