Kwara govt warns residents against encroaching on major roads in Ilorin

Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Kwara State Government has once again vowed to remove any impediments to the free flow of both vehicular and human traffics on major roads, especially within Ilorin, the state capital.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman, stated this in Ilorin on Wednesday while updating newsmen on the recent exercise carried out at some strategic locations in the Ilorin metropolis.

“Myself, the Commissioner for Business, Innovation, and Technology, and the Commissioner for Works have had several meetings with Post Office Marketers and other stakeholders on the need to stop displaying their goods under the bridge, road median, and pedestrian walkways for the easy movement of people and vehicles.

“During our discussions, we took them to Soludero Park and showed them where to display their goods and also informed others to move to Kulende Market to display their goods, to no avail.”

Ndanusa further stated that the ministry also gave them until the 15th of December, 2023, to vacate the areas, but they appealed to the ministry to give them until the end of December for them to be able to market their goods during the festivities.

“We granted their request and agreed that they vacate the place in the first week of January, 2024, but to our dismay, they refused to vacate up until this morning when we started the enforcement.

“Let me use this medium to warn marketers at Post Office and all other major markets in the state that we are not going back on our decision on these encroachments. Whoever is caught displaying wares on the pedestrian walkway, road median, under the bridge, or any other area that will inhibit the free movement of vehicles or people plying the road will face the full wrath of the law,” he added.

Ndanusa further reiterated the commitment of the present administration in the state to ensure sanity on our roads, allowing for the free movement of vehicles and humans to prevent the incessant havoc often caused by the encroachment of roads.
