Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Federal Government has freed 15 inmates from the Malumfashi Satellite Custodial Centre, Katsina State, in a bid to tackle overcrowding in the facility.

Under the direction of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, fines and compensations were provided for the 15 inmates, leading to their release from confinement.

The Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa, who revealed this on Saturday, explained that each released individual received N10,000 to aid their journey back home.

Nababa expressed gratitude to the Minister for the intervention, acknowledging its potential to significantly reduce overcrowding.

Emphasizing that the freed inmates were individuals convicted of minor offences, Abdulmumin-Haruna, the controller of corrections for the Katsina Command, highlighted that the initiative is aimed at addressing overcrowding in custodial centres.

While the 15 inmates rejoiced after regaining their freedom, the Katsina controller of offered words of encouragement to those who did not make the list.

He urged them not to perceive their confinement as the end but as an opportunity for a fresh start.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of maintaining good behavior in accordance with the custodial centre’s rules and regulations.
