Africa-Press – Nigeria. A group, the Northern Elders Support Group, has accused Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal, of paying insufficient attention to the worsening security situation in the state amid persistent bandit attacks.
In a statement signed by its acting chairman, Yusuf Abubakar, the group said residents were increasingly concerned about rising violence, which it noted had displaced communities and disrupted economic activities across several parts of Zamfara.
The elders alleged that the governor was more engaged in political disputes than in addressing insecurity, urging him to prioritise efforts aimed at restoring peace in affected areas.
The group also criticised what it described as frequent public disagreements between the governor and federal authorities, including President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, warning that such disagreements could undermine coordinated security operations.
Similarly, the Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the governor of politicising security challenges in the state, alleging that ongoing disputes were affecting collaboration with federal agencies.
In a related development, the Northern Democratic Watch called for a declaration of a state of emergency in Zamfara, citing concerns over governance and security in the state.
Governor Lawal has previously stated that his administration has taken steps to address insecurity, including the recruitment of over 2,000 community security personnel and the provision of operational vehicles to security agencies.
He has also argued that progress has been affected by limited state control over the security architecture and inadequate cooperation from federal forces.
The Northern Elders Support Group, however, urged the state government to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, stressing that residents were primarily interested in improved security and stability.
