Africa-Press – Nigeria. A governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ogun State, Iyabo Obasanjo, has voiced strong optimism about clinching the party’s ticket, citing her widespread support as a major advantage ahead of the 2027 election.

Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, Obasanjo said the party’s possible adoption of a consensus candidate could tilt things in her favour.

“I see it as beneficial to me. Several others have not officially declared, even though their actions suggest interest, and no fresh aspirant has stepped forward this late compared to when I made my intention known,” she said.

She also pointed out that many of those likely to contest have yet to actively connect with the grassroots, unlike her ongoing engagement with communities.

“Most of them haven’t really gone out to interact with people at the community level or openly discuss their ambition,” she noted.

Obasanjo stressed that her backing comes from her track record in office rather than financial influence.

“For me, it’s clearly an advantage, and I’m very confident about the support I enjoy on the ground. It’s not built on money politics but on my performance as commissioner for health and later as a senator,” she explained.

“As a senator representing my district, many still regard my tenure as the most impactful. You can ask ordinary people or visit local markets,” she added.

On the issue of consensus, she argued that such a process would still reflect the wishes of party members and the electorate.

“I believe consensus can produce credible candidates. It doesn’t mean leaders ignore public opinion; rather, it involves considering what people actually want. No party deliberately picks a candidate that could cost them victory,” she said.

She further maintained that consensus would naturally favour aspirants with proven popularity and strong chances at the polls.

“Consensus will ultimately favour those who can win elections, because the party’s goal is victory.

“They won’t impose an unpopular choice that could create tension among aspirants or discourage strong contenders. That’s why I’m convinced consensus is the right path,” Obasanjo said.
