Africa-Press – Nigeria. Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, says Nigeria is now endangered by the martial tendencies of the National Assembly.
The statement comes after the Senate passed the Police Act amendment bill to extend the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, IGP.
The Police Act (Amendment) Bill 2024, seeks to amend the Police Act of 2020.
The Bill was sent to the National Assembly on Tuesday by President Bola Tinubu.
The amendment Bill proposes changes to the tenure of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) by increasing the retirement age of police officers from 60 to 65 years and their tenure of service from 35 to 40 years.
However, in a post on his X handle on Thursday, Odinkalu questioned how the National Assembly could pass an executive bill extending the tenure of the IGP indefinitely without a public hearing.
He said: “#Nigeria is now endangered by the martial tendencies of its @nassnigeria. In 1 day, both chambers of the NASS passed an executive bill extending the tenure of the IG of @PoliceNG indefinitely & without a public hearing.
