Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Rivers State Police Command said that it has arrested two suspected cultists, including a serving police officer, during the signing-out activities of final-year students at the University of Port Harcourt.

Spokesperson of the Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement on Friday, said the incident occurred on September 26, 2025, when the University’s Internal Security team confronted Police Corporal Onwukwe Godswill, attached to the Elimgbu Division, and a 200-level Biomedical Technology student of the University, Ifeanyi Israel, over fears of a possible clash with rival cultists on campus.

Iringe-Koko explained that operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit were immediately deployed to the scene, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

According to the statement, a search on the suspects yielded two locally made pistols, four rounds of live cartridges, two rounds of 9mm live ammunition, and one small axe.

SP Iringe-Koko further disclosed that a follow-up search at Corporal Onwukwe’s residence resulted in the recovery of another locally made pistol and two machetes.

“The suspects and exhibits are currently in police custody. An in-depth investigation has been launched to determine the full extent of the suspects’ involvement in cultism and other related activities,” she said.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to rid the state of criminals.

The statement quoted the Commissioner as saying, “There will be no hiding place for criminals in Rivers State. We remain unrelenting in our commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.”

He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security agency, stressing that collective efforts are essential to building a safer state.
