Rowdy session in Senate as lawmakers quarrel over sitting arrangement

Africa-Press – Nigeria. There were rowdy scenes at the Senate on Tuesday as three senators engaged in a heated debate over seating arrangements.

Two senators – Danjuma Goje, Gombe Central, and Sahabi Yau, Zamfara North – had expressed displeasure over the seats assigned to them, and complained to Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Majority Leader.

Senator Sunday Karimi, who represents Kogi West, is the chairman of the Senate Services Committee.

The Senate’s standing rules stipulate that senators should sit in order of rank.

The heated argument among the three senators began while the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read his welcome address.

Goje and Yau, who were sitting on the second row on the right side of the aisle, signalled they did not like the seats allocated to them by the Senate Services Committee.

The senators insisted that they should have been assigned seats on the front row on the extreme right, opposite the row of the majority leader and the deputy senate president.

The red chamber is using its refurbished chamber, two years after renovations began on it.
